The Two Machines You Cannot Skip
A hardwood refinish needs two sanders, not one, and the second is the one people try to skip.
The drum-style hardwood floor sander at $75 a day does the field — the open floor area. A rotating drum wrapped in a sanding belt cuts the old finish and a whisker of wood with it. It is aggressive, and that is the point, but it also means it will gouge a floor if you let it sit still while running. Keep it moving, always.
The 7-inch edger at $55 a day does everything the drum cannot reach: the perimeter, closets, under the toe kick, around radiators. A drum sander physically cannot get within a few inches of a wall, so without an edger you finish with a sanded floor surrounded by a border of old finish. There is no way around this — rent both.
The 17-inch floor polisher at $50 a day is the third machine, and it is optional but transformative. Fitted with a 120-grit sanding screen at $9.95 it does the final screen pass that blends the drum and edger marks into one uniform surface. - Sand with the grain, not across it. Cross-grain scratches show through finish and are extremely difficult to remove afterward.
- Countersink every nail first. One proud nail head will tear a belt and can score the floor. Walk the room with a nail set before the machine comes out.
- Practice in a closet. Get the feel of starting, stopping and turning somewhere nobody will look.
- Vacuum between every grit. Grit carried from a coarse pass into a fine pass leaves scratches you will only notice once the finish goes on.
- Wear a proper respirator. Fine wood dust is a genuine respiratory hazard, and floors from before 1978 may carry lead-based finishes — if that is a possibility, get the finish tested before you sand it.
