Why 37 Tons Matters in North Texas

Log splitter capacity is rated in tons of hydraulic force, and most consumer splitters sold at big-box stores are 20 to 25 tons. That is adequate for softwood and clean, straight-grained rounds. It is not always adequate here.

North Texas hardwood is unforgiving. Post oak, live oak, pecan, hackberry and mesquite are dense, and the pieces that actually need splitting are the ones with knots, crotches and twisted grain — exactly where a 20-ton machine stalls with the wedge buried in the round. Getting a stuck wedge out of a half-split oak crotch is a genuinely miserable twenty minutes.

Working Safely and Seasoning Properly

• Never put a hand near the wedge while the ram moves. Position the round, step back, then operate. A hydraulic splitter does not care what is in the way and there is no reaction time to speak of.
• One operator. The person loading rounds and the person on the control lever must be the same person. Two-person splitting is where hands get crushed.
• Set up level and chock the wheels. A towable splitter on a slope will move while you work.
• Keep bystanders well back. Split pieces come off with force and unpredictable direction. Children and pets need to be inside, not watching.
• Never cut with a chainsaw above shoulder height, or on a ladder. If the work is overhead, that is a tree service job. Kickback at head height is how people are killed.
• Season it properly. Freshly split oak needs 12 months stacked off the ground with the top covered and the sides open. Burning green wood produces poor heat and heavy creosote, which is a chimney fire risk.
• Stack as you split. Handling each piece once is far less work than making a pile and then moving it again, and after two hours of splitting you will not want to.
